A mattress literally has to ‘fit’ your body if it is to healthy sleep. There are a few rules which you should generally follow when choosing a mattress.
In principle, a mattress should be a good twenty centimetres longer than your body.
In terms of the width, the mattress should be at least one metre wide for individuals, and at least one metre and 60 centimetres wide for two people.
It is important that every part of the body is properly supported. There shouldn’t be any dents in the mattress – these indicate that the body is not being correctly supported.
In terms of the bed’s firmness, it is usually advisable to have a mattress that is neither too hard nor too soft. If you sleep on a mattress that is too hard, you may develop problems with the parts of your body that are in contact with the mattress, which can lead to circulatory problems. If a mattress is too soft the spine is not properly supported, which may also lead to unrestful sleep.
The most common ailment in Germany strikes without mercy if the spine is placed under stress while sleeping. You can only prevent back pain in the long run if you have a good lying position!
Lying with the neck in the wrong position can lead to tension in the muscles of the neck, which can lead to persistent headaches.
Tension in the shoulders
Lying in an anatomically incorrect position often leads to permanent tension in the muscles of the back and shoulders – and leads to corresponding bouts of pain.
The hips are subjected to a lot of spot pressure if the mattress is too hard, and this can lead to joint aches and ultimately inflammation.
Even inflamed knee joints (due to arthritis) can be subjected to unnecessary strains from the pressure of a poorly chosen mattress and this can make them even more sensitive.
Swollen calves and feet can be extremely irritating, especially if you have to do a lot of standing at work and need to relieve this pressure at night.
